Below is information about a new Iowa law, House File 2618, which impacts elementary (defined as K-6) literacy and retention policies. Two key points you should be aware of are:

Personalized Reading Plans:

Children who are not yet proficient in reading on a consistent basis are now entitled to a Personalized Reading Plan. Our teachers already implement personalized reading plans and interventions for students struggling with literacy. A child’s plan is always available for discussion with families. We are committed to working closely with parents to support each child’s reading development through targeted instruction and support!

New Parental Rights:

Under this law, schools are required to notify parents if their child in grades K-6 is not reading at grade-level proficiency. Parents now have the right to request that their child repeat a grade if they are not proficient in reading. This option applies only to students with consistent difficulties in reading proficiency. Parents of students who would be eligible for a retention discussion and decision will be notified in the spring. Parents considering retention for a child at the end of the school year will be required to meet with your child’s teacher and building administrator to review your student’s progress throughout the year.

Our goal is to ensure every student succeeds in reading. We look forward to continuing to partner with you to support your child’s literacy growth.
