A LOOK AT WHAT WE’RE

Reading and Writing

Diving into Nonfiction Reading and Writing The second quarter is an awesome time in reading for the 5th graders! We turn our attention from fiction to nonfiction literature with a focus on World War II. In writing, students are researching and writing informational papers on people, places, and events that played a big role in World War II. Topics range from General George Patton to Auschwitz, and to the development and dropping of the atomic bombs. We are reading the book I Have Lived a Thousand Years to give the students a closer look into the Holocaust, and the students are reading World War II topic books in their guided reading groups. We use our WW2 books to look in-depth into main ideas, text structures, and inferencing. It is all very eye-opening and fun for the students!
